Pakistan is facing one of the most severe hepatitis epidemics in the world. Nearly 14 million people across the country are infected with hepatitis C alone, and millions more carry hepatitis B — many without even knowing it. In Balochistan, where healthcare infrastructure is limited and awareness about the disease remains dangerously low, the crisis is particularly acute.

For residents of Quetta and surrounding districts, finding a hepatitis treatment center has never been straightforward. Many people do not know where to get tested, who to consult, or which centers near them offer hepatitis services. This lack of accessible information costs lives every day. People delay testing, miss treatment windows, and unknowingly spread the virus to their families and communities.

Youth Association for Development (YAD), one of Quetta’s most impactful NGOs led by founder and CEO Mr. Atta ul Haq Khaderzai, recognized that technology could be the bridge between hepatitis patients and the treatment they urgently need. With support from Gilead Sciences Inc. USA through the All4Liver Asia Grant 2021, YAD launched an ambitious project: “Elimination of Hepatitis Through Partnership, Engagement, Digital and Artificial Intelligence-Based Systems in District Quetta.”

To bring this vision to life, YAD partnered with Jahasoft Ltd — Quetta’s trusted software development company — to build the digital backbone of the project. Jahasoft Ltd developed three critical digital products that now serve as lifelines for hepatitis awareness and treatment access in Quetta:

  1. The YAD Official Websiteyad.org.pk

  2. The Hepatitis Connect Websitehepatitis-connect.com

  3. The Hepatitis Connect Mobile App — available on both Android (Google Play) and iOS (App Store)

This article tells the full story of how these digital platforms were developed, what they do, and why they matter for the future of healthcare in Quetta and Balochistan.

The Hepatitis Crisis in Pakistan: Why This Project Matters

A National Emergency

Hepatitis is not just a health concern in Pakistan — it is a national emergency. The country has one of the highest hepatitis prevalence rates in the world. The virus is commonly transmitted through unsafe injections, contaminated blood transfusions, unsterilized medical and dental equipment, mother-to-child transmission during birth, and exposure to infected body fluids.

In a country where a significant portion of healthcare is provided by the private sector — including clinics, dispensaries, and traditional practitioners — the risk of transmission through unsafe medical practices is alarmingly high. Reuse of syringes, unscreened blood, and unsterilized surgical instruments remain common problems, particularly in underserved regions like Balochistan.

The Situation in Quetta and Balochistan

Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan, serves as the primary healthcare hub for the entire province as well as cross-border populations from Afghanistan and Iran. Despite being the largest city in the province, Quetta faces significant healthcare challenges including limited access to specialized treatment centers, low public awareness about hepatitis transmission and prevention, stigma surrounding the disease that prevents people from seeking testing and treatment, geographic barriers that make it difficult for people in remote districts to access care, and shortage of trained healthcare professionals specializing in hepatitis management.

Research published in BMC Public Health found that knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding hepatitis B among the general population of Quetta was worryingly low, with major gaps in understanding how the virus spreads and how it can be prevented. This means that even when treatment is available, many people are not seeking it — either because they do not know they are infected or because stigma and misinformation prevent them from accessing care.

YAD’s Vision: Eliminating Hepatitis Through Digital Innovation

Mr. Atta ul Haq Khaderzai, the founder and CEO of Youth Association for Development, has been a leading voice in public health advocacy in Balochistan for over two decades. Under his leadership, YAD has worked with major international partners including USAID, World Bank, Peace Direct, and Gilead Sciences to address critical social and health challenges in the region.

When Gilead Sciences Inc. USA awarded YAD the All4Liver Asia Grant in 2021, Mr. Atta ul Haq envisioned a project that would go beyond traditional awareness campaigns. He understood that in today’s world, digital tools could reach more people, faster and more effectively than conventional methods alone.

The project’s objectives were clear — establish diverse and inclusive partnerships to increase hepatitis awareness in communities, and produce strategic digital and AI-based systems that improve access between hepatitis service seekers and hepatitis service providers in District Quetta.

YAD has since established over 30 hepatitis support groups across the district, created community-based resource centers, launched a hepatitis lifeline helpline center, and — with Jahasoft Ltd’s technical expertise — built the digital platforms that tie everything together.

Jahasoft Ltd: The Technology Partner Behind the Digital Transformation

Why YAD Chose Jahasoft Ltd

When it came to selecting a technology partner to build these critical digital platforms, YAD needed a company that combined technical excellence with deep local understanding. They needed a team that could build products meeting international standards while also understanding the unique realities of Quetta — the connectivity challenges, the multilingual user base, the varying levels of digital literacy among the target audience.

Jahasoft Ltd was the natural choice. As a software company registered in Pakistan, the UK, and the USA, Jahasoft brings world-class development capabilities while being rooted right here in Quetta. The Jahasoft team understood the local healthcare landscape, the cultural sensitivities around hepatitis, and the practical challenges of building digital products that need to work reliably across Balochistan’s varied connectivity conditions.

What Jahasoft Ltd Delivered

Jahasoft Ltd was responsible for the complete design, development, testing, and deployment of three interconnected digital platforms:

1. The YAD Official Website (yad.org.pk) — A comprehensive organizational website showcasing YAD’s mission, programs, projects, publications, and impact across Balochistan.

2. The Hepatitis Connect Website (hepatitis-connect.com) — A dedicated health information and center-finding platform focused specifically on hepatitis awareness and treatment access in Quetta.

3. The Hepatitis Connect Mobile App (Android & iOS) — A mobile application that puts hepatitis center search, health information, and support resources directly in the hands of people across Quetta and beyond.

The YAD Website: Giving Quetta’s Leading NGO a Digital Home

About the YAD Website

The YAD website serves as the official digital presence for Youth Association for Development. Before this website, much of YAD’s incredible work across Balochistan lacked a centralized, professional online platform where donors, partners, beneficiaries, and the general public could learn about the organization’s programs and impact.

Key Features of the YAD Website

Organizational Overview: The website clearly presents YAD’s vision, mission, and objectives, giving visitors a comprehensive understanding of the organization’s purpose and approach to development work in Balochistan.

Program Areas and Projects: Detailed pages showcase YAD’s diverse portfolio of projects, including the Gilead-supported hepatitis elimination project, mental health programs for Afghan refugee children supported by the Peace of Mind Foundation Switzerland, democracy and gender equality initiatives, and many more.

Publications and Resources: YAD’s research, reports, and publications are made available for download, increasing the organization’s visibility in the development and public health sectors.

Job and Tender Listings: The website includes a dedicated section for employment opportunities and tenders, supporting transparency and accessibility in YAD’s recruitment and procurement processes.

Gallery and Blog: Visual documentation of YAD’s work across Balochistan and a blog section for sharing insights, updates, and thought leadership on critical issues.

Partner Showcase: The website prominently features YAD’s impressive roster of partners including Gilead Sciences, USAID, UNDP, Peace Direct, World Bank, ViiV Healthcare, The Nexus Fund, and many others — reinforcing the organization’s credibility and track record.

Why the YAD Website Matters

For an NGO operating in Balochistan, having a professional, well-designed website is not a luxury — it is a necessity. International donors and funding bodies evaluate organizations partly based on their digital presence. A strong website builds trust, demonstrates professionalism, and makes it easier for potential partners and supporters to find and engage with YAD’s work.

Jahasoft Ltd designed the YAD website with a focus on clarity, ease of navigation, visual impact, and mobile responsiveness — ensuring that the site works beautifully whether accessed from a laptop in a donor’s office overseas or a smartphone in a village in Balochistan.

Hepatitis Connect Website: A Digital Hub for Hepatitis Awareness

About the Hepatitis Connect Website

The Hepatitis Connect website is a purpose-built health information platform focused entirely on hepatitis awareness, education, and treatment access in Quetta. Developed by Jahasoft Ltd as part of the Gilead-supported elimination project, the website serves as a one-stop digital resource for anyone seeking information about hepatitis in the region.

What You Will Find on Hepatitis Connect

Search for Hepatitis Centers in Quetta: The core feature of the website is its hepatitis center search functionality. Users can find nearby hepatitis treatment and testing centers in Quetta, making it easier for patients to locate the care they need without spending hours asking around or traveling to the wrong facilities.

Educational Health Content: The website features detailed, easy-to-understand articles on critical topics including what viral hepatitis is and how it affects the liver, how hepatitis B and C are transmitted and how to prevent transmission, the importance of early testing and treatment, how to control and eliminate hepatitis in non-clinical settings, and why hepatitis cannot wait — explaining the urgency of addressing the epidemic in Pakistan.

Resource for Healthcare Workers and Community Leaders: The content on Hepatitis Connect is designed not only for patients but also for healthcare professionals, community health workers, caregivers, teachers, faith-based leaders, and policymakers. The site supports YAD’s broader strategy of engaging patients, peer support groups, and multi-stakeholder networks in the fight against hepatitis.

The Impact of the Hepatitis Connect Website

By making hepatitis information accessible online, the Hepatitis Connect website helps break down the barriers of stigma and misinformation that have long prevented people in Quetta from seeking testing and treatment. Someone who might be too embarrassed to ask about hepatitis in person can now quietly access accurate, reliable information from the privacy of their own device.

Hepatitis Connect Mobile App: Healthcare in the Palm of Your Hand

The Need for a Mobile App

While the website serves as an excellent resource, Jahasoft Ltd and YAD recognized that in Quetta and across Pakistan, mobile phones are far more widely used than desktop computers for accessing the internet. A dedicated mobile app would make hepatitis center search and health information even more accessible — especially for younger users, field health workers, and people in areas with limited broadband connectivity.

Available on Android and iOS

Jahasoft Ltd developed the Hepatitis Connect app as a cross-platform mobile application, available for free download on both major platforms:

📱 Android: Download from Google Play Store

📱 iOS: Available on the Apple App Store

This ensures that regardless of whether someone uses a Samsung, Huawei, iPhone, or any other smartphone, they can access Hepatitis Connect and find the help they need.

Key Features of the Hepatitis Connect App

Find Nearby Hepatitis Centers: The app’s primary feature is its center search functionality. Users can search for hepatitis testing and treatment centers in Quetta, view details about each center, and get directions — all from their phone. This is especially valuable for people who are new to Quetta or unfamiliar with the city’s healthcare facilities.

Hepatitis Health Information: The app provides access to educational content about hepatitis — what it is, how it spreads, how to prevent it, and why early testing is critical. This content is presented in a mobile-friendly format that is easy to read and navigate.

Citation and Source References: The app includes citations and source references for all health information, ensuring that users can trust the accuracy of the content and verify it through credible medical sources.

Lightweight and Fast: Jahasoft designed the app to be lightweight, consuming minimal storage and data. This is an important consideration in Quetta, where many users have limited data plans and older smartphones with restricted storage capacity.

Regular Updates: The app receives regular updates to improve functionality, add new features, and keep the hepatitis center database current. Jahasoft Ltd ensures that the app evolves to meet the changing needs of its users.

The Technology Behind the Build: How Jahasoft Made It Happen

Understanding the Requirements

Before writing a single line of code, Jahasoft Ltd invested significant time in understanding the project’s requirements. Our team met with YAD’s leadership, project managers, and community health workers to understand the workflows, user needs, and technical constraints. We studied the target audience — people in Quetta who may have varying levels of digital literacy and access to different types of devices and internet connectivity.

Designing for Accessibility

Accessibility was at the heart of every design decision. The YAD website, the Hepatitis Connect website, and the Hepatitis Connect app were all designed with clean, intuitive interfaces that do not require technical expertise to navigate. Large buttons, clear labels, simple navigation menus, and readable fonts ensure that users of all ages and backgrounds can find what they need quickly.

Mobile-First Development

Given that the majority of internet users in Quetta access the web through their smartphones, Jahasoft adopted a mobile-first development approach. All three platforms — both websites and the mobile app — are fully responsive and optimized for mobile devices. Whether you are using the latest iPhone or a budget Android phone, the experience is smooth and functional.

Cross-Platform App Development

The Hepatitis Connect app was developed as a cross-platform application for both Android and iOS. This approach allowed Jahasoft to deliver a consistent user experience across both platforms while keeping development efficient and cost-effective — an important consideration for a grant-funded NGO project.

Testing and Quality Assurance

Every platform went through rigorous testing before launch. Jahasoft tested across multiple devices, screen sizes, browsers, and network conditions to ensure reliability. Special attention was paid to performance under low-bandwidth conditions, which is a real-world challenge in many parts of Balochistan.

Ongoing Maintenance and Support

Jahasoft Ltd did not simply deliver the products and walk away. We provide ongoing technical support, regular updates, and maintenance for all three platforms. As the hepatitis elimination project evolves and new features are needed — whether it is adding more centers to the database, updating health content, or improving the search functionality — Jahasoft is there to make it happen.

International Recognition: A Project That the World Is Watching

The collaboration between YAD, Gilead Sciences, and Jahasoft Ltd has not gone unnoticed on the global stage. The project has been featured on the Synapse Connect Patient Engagement Platform, an international initiative that tracks and showcases innovative patient engagement programs from around the world. The project is listed under the title “Elimination of Hepatitis Through Partnership, Engagement, Digital and Artificial Intelligence-Based Systems in Quetta” — a recognition of its innovative approach to combining community engagement with digital technology.

Furthermore, Mr. Atta ul Haq’s work has been recognized by the Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination (CGHE) through the Global Hep platform, which profiles global leaders working toward hepatitis elimination. YAD’s establishment of over 30 hepatitis support groups in Quetta, supported by Gilead’s All4Liver grant, has been highlighted as a model for community-based hepatitis elimination efforts worldwide.

This international recognition validates the approach — and confirms that what Jahasoft Ltd and YAD have built together in Quetta is not just a local solution, but a model that can inspire similar initiatives across Pakistan and beyond.

How Hepatitis Connect Contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals

The Hepatitis Connect project directly contributes to multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

SDG 3 — Good Health and Well-Being: By improving access to hepatitis testing and treatment information, Hepatitis Connect directly supports the goal of ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages.

SDG 5 — Gender Equality: Hepatitis disproportionately affects women in Pakistan, particularly through mother-to-child transmission and unsafe healthcare practices. By providing accessible digital health tools, the project empowers women to take control of their health outcomes.

SDG 10 — Reduced Inequalities: People in Quetta and rural Balochistan have historically had far less access to health information and services compared to those in major cities like Karachi and Lahore. Hepatitis Connect helps reduce this inequality by putting vital health information in the hands of the underserved.

SDG 17 — Partnerships for the Goals: The collaboration between YAD (a local NGO), Gilead Sciences (a global pharmaceutical company), and Jahasoft Ltd (a local technology company) is a powerful example of multi-sector partnership driving sustainable development outcomes.

What This Means for Healthcare Technology in Quetta

The success of the Hepatitis Connect project demonstrates something important: world-class healthcare technology solutions can be designed, developed, and deployed right here in Quetta, by a local team that understands the needs of the people it serves.

For too long, the assumption has been that meaningful health-tech innovation only happens in Silicon Valley, Karachi, or Lahore. The Hepatitis Connect project proves that wrong. Jahasoft Ltd, working from Quetta, delivered a suite of digital products that meets international standards, serves a critical public health need, and has earned global recognition.

This sets a precedent — and an invitation — for other healthcare organizations, NGOs, and government bodies in Balochistan to embrace digital solutions. Whether it is disease surveillance systems, telemedicine platforms, patient management tools, or public health awareness apps, the capability to build these solutions locally now exists in Quetta through Jahasoft Ltd.
